Build Real Management Capability and Leadership Depth
What it means
Managers have become managers rather than senior doers with coordination duties. They own team output, planning, assignment, coaching, performance, decision-making and capability development. Their teams become stronger because management exists, rather than more dependent on a skilled person who happens to have a management title. Routine performance issues are addressed at the appropriate level instead of waiting until the founder notices or intervenes.
What it requires
This milestone also requires functional leaders to own the conditions that produce their results. Accountability must be matched by enough authority, information and resources to influence the outcome. A sales leader cannot own a revenue number while every pricing exception waits for the founder. An operations leader cannot own delivery economics without visibility into capacity and the authority to change the operating model. The company has to align responsibility with the levers required to act.
Why it matters
Leadership depth matters because Organizational Capability cannot sit only at the top. Senior leaders should be building stronger managers beneath them, improving judgment and reducing key-person dependence. The Growth company does not yet need the succession architecture of Mature Scale, but it does need enough bench strength that normal pressure does not force every difficult decision back to a small number of people.
A question to test it
