Institutionalize Capital Allocation and Portfolio Discipline
What it means
The enterprise treats businesses, units, products and major investments as competing uses of scarce capital, talent and executive attention. Investment criteria are explicit enough that proposals can be compared across sponsors and organizational boundaries. Historical importance and political influence may remain part of the context, but they do not substitute for strategic fit, expected value, risk, reversibility and the future role of the asset in the portfolio.
What it requires
Portfolio discipline means the company has more options than keep or kill. Leaders can choose to invest, improve, reshape, combine, harvest, exit or divest depending on the strategic role and evidence. Unit economics and forward-looking strategic value are visible enough to support those choices. The institutional test is whether the company can move resources away from a legacy business that still performs acceptably when a stronger future use has emerged.
A question to test it
What recent example from your own company would confirm or rule this out?
