Institutionalize Leadership Reproduction and Succession
What it means
Mature Scale leadership is not secure because the current executive team is strong. It is secure when the enterprise can keep producing capable leaders and credible successors. CEO and mission-critical succession operate as continuing governance disciplines. Critical roles have successor options, readiness assessments and development moves before a departure becomes likely. Senior leaders are evaluated partly by the strength of management and leadership they create beneath them.
What it requires
This milestone also changes the way the organization interprets talent risk. A great executive who leaves no bench creates current performance and future fragility at the same time. Mature Scale management therefore develops multiple people capable of broader scope, exposes them to consequential work and tests readiness before the institution needs an emergency replacement. Leadership continuity becomes designed rather than improvised.
