Prove the Customer and the Recurring Problem

What it means

The company has accumulated enough paid market evidence to identify a recognizable customer and a recurring problem that repeatedly creates enough consequence or urgency to produce action. The target market is becoming clearer as evidence improves. Recent customers share meaningful characteristics, buying situations or triggers, and the founder can explain who tends to buy, what has happened in their world before they start looking and what they are trying to change. This does not require a perfect demographic profile. It requires a repeatable pattern that is visible in paid behavior.

What it requires

The distinction between interest and purchase matters here. Prospects may praise an idea, accept a free trial, take a meeting or say they would use the product, but those signals are weaker than repeated paid commitment. The milestone becomes credible when the company can compare recent wins, losses and no-decisions and identify a pattern that explains why certain customers move while others do not. The founder should be able to say which evidence supports the current target and which evidence would cause the company to narrow or change it.

Why it matters

A strong milestone does not mean the company must reject every customer outside the core pattern. Early revenue can still come from adjacent cases. The question is whether the company knows which customers are creating the clearest evidence about the business it should build. If every inquiry still seems equally attractive, the market pattern is probably too weak. The practical completion standard is that the founder can name the customer and problem in plain language, point to a recent body of paid evidence and explain why that pattern deserves further investment.
